Joel working on the Chevy Chase Town CouncilJoel currently serves the community of Chevy Chase as a Member of the Town Council. He is the only non-incumbent candidate to have held elected office, preparing him for the duties and responsibilities of faithfully representing your interests in Annapolis. He has been an activist in his community for more than a decade and ran for Congress in 2016 in the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, ultimately losing to his friend Jamie Raskin. As Councilman, Joel led the communities response when hate-filled flyer , in fighting for voter enfranchisement, in seeking a smart way forward for the implementation of the Purple Line, and in protecting the environment.

He will fight for you to ensure that we have retirement security for all of our senior citizens, a transportation network that works for everyone, a clean environment that we can be proud of, public schools that are world-class, a budget that makes sense, and a voice in Annapolis that stands up to the hatred and bigotry of the day. His background in education earned him the support of the Montgomery County Education Association, so look for him on the Apple Ballot!

Joel with his Environmental Education studentsJoel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica where he helped women farmers build a sustainable co-op and taught environmental education in communities near a protected forest. That forest was upgraded to a full National Park, and Joel’s students now teach their own children to protect it.

He then became a federal civil servant and a U.S. Senate aide, as well as a non-profit activist, focused primarily on energy, Middle East, and national security issues. He was appointed to serve in the Obama Administration as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, during which time he testified to Congress. He’s currently a Visiting Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s public policy graduate school in Washington, DC, a foreign affairs consultant, and a frequent progressive national security commentator on MSNBC.

Joel knows how to take on the tough fights and win. He will fight for equality. He will combat racism and sexism in all its forms. He will protect our community’s values in Annapolis. Together, let’s take our country back!
