Joel Calls on Governor to Rescind Veto of Law Requiring Teachers on Board of Education
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Joel Calls Out Governor Hogan, Launches Petition to Rescind Veto
Yesterday Governor Hogan vetoed three key Education bills, characterizing the teachers and parents supporting the legislation as "appointees that represent the interest of lobbyists." In response, Joel launched this petition on Change.org calling on the Governor to rescind his veto.
"We call on Governor Hogan to rescind his vetoes of Senate Bill 739, House Bill 643 / Senate Bill 678, and House Bill 808. These bills were overwhelmingly passed by the General Assembly this year. We believe that the Governor's actions are a direct affront to the will of Maryland’s residents, our schools, and our children."
Senate Bill 739 would have placed two active teachers and one public school parent on the state Board of Education. This legislation passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support.
"As teachers, parents, students, and voters committed to a public education system that benefits every Marylander, any one of us could serve on the Board of Education under this legislation. Therefore, we condemn Governor Hogan's shameful characterization of us as "appointees that represent the interest of lobbyists." Our children, Governor Hogan, are not a “special interest” to be ignored. They deserve better, and that will start with your rescission of this shameful veto."
