The Montgomery County Education Association, representing over 14,000 public school teachers and educational professionals, has just endorsed Joel Rubin for the Maryland House of Delegates, Legislative District 18.

“As a former teacher, the son and brother of public sector educators, and the father of three young girls attending Montgomery County Public Schools, the quality of our public schools is personal to me. I believe in public education, and that’s why I’m so honored to receive the support of the Montgomery County Education Association,” said Joel.

“Our schools are the cornerstone of our county, and our teachers, who dedicate their careers to shaping the lives of both our children and our county, deserve our unyielding support. I promise to fight every day in Annapolis for our children, our teachers, our parents, and our schools, so that both Montgomery County and Maryland will thrive.”

“Specifically, Montgomery County must receive its fair share of state funding to meet the needs of our diverse student population,” said Joel. “We have multiple urgent demands, from school construction to teacher salaries to curriculum design. I will be a champion for these causes in Annapolis, to ensure that we lay the foundation for both our children’s individual success and the economic vitality of the region as a whole.”

Joel currently serves in local government as the Treasurer of the Town of Chevy Chase. He is also a Visiting Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s graduate school for public policy in Washington, DC. Joel earned a Certificate in Elementary Education from Brandeis University and taught environmental education in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica; his wife, Nilmini, serves on the Academy of the Global Teacher Prize; his sister is a Professor of Education at Rutgers University; and his mother is a retired Penn State University Professor of English.

This endorsement follows a series of announcements from a variety of progressive groups supporting Joel’s campaign. Moms Demand Action, a grassroots movement for gun violence prevention, declared Joel to be a “Gun Sense Candidate.” Joel received a “100% Pro-Choice” rating from NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland for his outspoken support for women and reproductive justice. He was also certified by Represent Maryland as a “Small Money Candidate” for his views on campaign finance.
